Will he stay or will he go?
After the events of this Monday’s RAW, CM Punk has the entire Internet Wrestling Community (or 10 percenters if you’re asking Eric Bischoff) scratching their heads. Not only did he guarantee he would win the WWE Championship from John Cena in front of his hometown of Chicago, he also informed the world he would be leaving the WWE. It’s been widely speculated that he is burnt out and/or frustrated with the company and once his contract was up he would be leaving. Now, internet rumors are hit or miss. We’ve seen some that have been dead on, and others that have been absolutely erroneous. Either way, being “10 percenters” or not, the WWE and TNA keep an eye on what we’re talking/ranting about.
So, that begs the question…is Punk really leaving, or is the WWE just trying to rib the internet marks like they’ve been known to do in the past? No matter what they have up their sleeves, they have built some incredible hype for the upcoming Money in the Bank PPV. MITB is already one of the most popular shows of the year, now not only will you get the two exciting MITB matches, but the main event has WWE’s most famous and popular superstars, facing off against the most hated, and arguably all-around skilled wrestler in the world. On top of that, it will be in Punk’s hometown of Chicago, a place that is always known to have some of the hottest crowds around. Cena gets almost 50/50 reactions no matter where he goes, but in Chicago..against their beloved Punk, Cena is in store for a reaction much like the one he got at One Night Stand 2 against Rob Van Dam.
If your asking me, I think the WWE is just trying to use a well-known internet rumor to their advantage, knowing that Punk either already has, or is planning on resigning his contract. It’s a brilliant move, and like I said before is building tremendous interest in Money in the Bank. If Punk truly is leaving, why would they send him off with a main event title match against their top star? It would make more sense to brush him off and have him put others over on his way out, not beat one of their other top stars Mysterio clean on Raw, then leave at the top of his game to possibly go to TNA hotter then ever. I personally don’t think he’d ever do that, but after Angle pulled the swerve in 2006 I would think WWE would be cautious of letting their top starts leave the company with a head of steam.
Now, IF Punk is leaving, what would he do with his time off? If he’s truly burnt out, one would think he would simply just rest and return to the company. But, throughout his career Punk hasn’t really taken too much time off, and one could speculate he would be downright bored not having wrestling in his life. If he was to wrestle, I personally think he would return to Ring of Honor where he still has some very close friends and help them get off the ground with their new television contract. RoH has the potential to even surpass TNA as the #2 company in the world with Jim Cornette’s wrestling brains and CM Punk’s recognition and skill. Either way, I think this will be a short break for Punk, as WWE realizes what he brings to their company, and will convince him to resign eventually. (if he hasn’t already)
